The first substantial hotel that was built during this boom time was the Court House. A classic Queensland style colonial building with a wide
veranda along its western facade overlooking the parklands, Dickson Inlet and the Cassowary Range.
The history of the Court House Hotel is like most colonial buildings constructed in the nineteenth century. Built in 1878 by Mr. W. H. Buchanan, it was known as the 'Buchanan's Family Hotel' and was
originally situated where the Courty beer garden is today. It was just a one-storey
building, the following year its name was changed to 'Buchanan's Court House Hotel'.
It was during this time Port Douglas flourished, The population rose to 8000 and in 1882 Port Douglas was declared a Port of Entry. 30 troopers were based here, along with a court house, storage warehouses and rudimentary housing...
